abside

Il catino dell’abside presenta Cristo Re, s. Vigilio, i martiri anauniesi.

The New Church

spormaggiore 39In 1866, the parish priest Don Tambosi asked for the construction of a new church, since the old one was insufficient.
Finally, prevedeva la costruzion of the engineer De Claricini, which provided for the construction of a new church nearby the old one was chosen.

Leopoldo De Claricini was born in Versa, Friuli in 1812. After his studies in Vienna he worked in Innsbruck, Trento and Gorizia. In Trentino he planned several churches among which that one in Spormaggiore, planned and built between 1867 and 1875. The unanimous effort and the enormous sacrifices finally get satisfaction by the solemn consecration by Bishop Mons. Haller September 29 1875. It is in Lombard style, with Byzantine elements, high and bright, wide windows and stones were used.
It is located on the North-South axis, unlike the old church, which accordingly to the tradition should be turned on the Orient. This is a really monumental structure.

spormaggiore 19 The statue represents Mother Mary with the infant Jesus. The left hand of the baby is stretched in order to reach a golden sphere offered from the left hand of Mother Mary; this invite us to think of Jesus who takes through the Holy Spirit and from the virgin Mother, the human nature for the redemption of the World. Mary and the Baby have their heads crowned.

At the pedestal is applied an addition of wood representing clouds, from which luminous rays spread out to signify the graces for the intercession of mother Mary. Upon the clouds is represented a painting of the moon, reminding the vision of S.t John (Ap 12.1).

spormaggiore 30 Belfort Castel in Spormaggiore

The ruins of Belfort Castle are situated along the route connecting Cavedago and Spormaggiore.
The first document dealing with the Castle dates 1311, when Henry, Count of Bohemia, granted Tissone of Altspaur the licence to build a guard tower along the “New Road”. The compound was composed of the present tower and a building just at the foot of it.

In 1350 the compound fell into the ’ hands, from Castel Campo, but very soon the Counts of Tyrol regained its possession.

After centuries of adventures, Belfort Castle faced in 1670 an horrible fire. Rebuilt in 1700 and destroyed the ancient buildings, a for summer holidays, was built. During the Napoleonic Era the compound was definitely ruined and abandoned

spormaggiore 47

The name "Corte" is first heard of in a historical document that dates back to 1299. The document is about a quarrel regarding the ownership of a vineyard located in Ravara. Tissone of Sporo demanded its ownership from the court of Spormaggiore by right given to him by Varderina, daughter of the late Gerardo.

At that time people did not have a family name, instead people would be identified with the name of the place they lived or where their land was. The family called "Dalla Corte" (of the Court) were the first people to own the court. In 1424 all information about the family was lost.

Like on the palette's painter, the nature's color in Spormaggiore melt with the daylight creating, every season and in the different hours of day, thousand tonality and gradations.

Castel BelfortSpormaggiore find oneself in the depht of this picture, where we find the more pretty natural expressions. Spormaggiore is a centre of the plateau's Paganella; the territory is most included in the boundaries of Natural Park "Adamello- Brenta", kingdom of last authentic brown bear of Alpi.
